I did it. I signed up for Bonnie Christine’s Immersion course for 2023 to become a surface pattern designer.
Years ago I tried designing fabric patterns on my own. I opened spoonflower and made a few sketches but I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t know what programs to use or even how to use them. Eventually, the dream of designing my own fabric patterns died off.
Fast forward a few years and I saw a post on Instagram about surface pattern design and it’s as if the clouds parted. I knew exactly what it was I was looking for. And it’s the Immersion course.
Today started orientation week. We are learning about all the different ways we can gather inspiration. That is something I struggle with in winter. Everything is usually covered in a foot of snow, or it’s completely brown and cloudy.
And so, it’s time to get my supplies ready, to start a daily sketching habit, and to find my inspiration in nature. I am heavily influenced by my garden, hiking the Ice Age trail in Wausau, Wisconsin, and historical textiles.
I plan on writing weekly blogs about my experience in the Immersion course. This way you can get a first hand experience from someone with ZERO experience in surface pattern design for a realistic look into the course.
See you next week as I begin Module 1!
