I’m finally getting back into the groove with pattern making along side my illustrations. I made this for the October challenge in the studio with @lizkohlerbrown
It’s inspired by by grandmothers artwork and I think it would make a lovely wallpaper or duvet cover!

I wish when I was younger I wasn’t as frightened

I wish when I was younger I wasn’t as frightened of birds as I was. I could have had so much more fun with our cockatiels we had, teaching them sounds to mimic.
Now, with every passing day, I find myself becoming more of a birder, trying to identify the ones I see or hear!

Todays prompt was a bee. I imagined how the bees feel in October, at the end of all their hard work pollinating, and they must be exhausted.

A little bit different. I’m tapping into my Scandinavian side with incorporating some rosemaling in my art. It’s a huge learning curve but I’ve always loved looking at my grandmothers paintings and dala horses.
I’ll be playing more with this both digitally and physically. I have an old sewing box I want to rosemal!

A sweet little petite print from module 2 of my #patternrepertoire historical course.
This past week we learned about foulards and gothic style. Now, every time I see someone in a suit, I’m staring at their tie 😆 almost every tie pattern has a foulard design on it.
It’s so interesting to me how much of a place historical patterns still have in the modern world. I love my whimsical birds and bugs, but my eyes have been opened to the possibilities of historical patterns as well.
I’m still working on incorporating some rosemaling in my designs too and need to dedicate more time to that style.

This little guy was SO SWEET. We found out he was

This little guy was SO SWEET. We found out he was three years old and he could live until 10! So just a youngin. I saw him posted on the Nextdoor app as being seen in someone’s backyard two days before we found him. I even went outside and sat watching the sky in case he flew by. And two days later he showed up in our woods. He must’ve known I was looking for him ☺️
I had cockatiels when I was younger and Luke had a Quaker parrot so we are somewhat familiar with handling birds, although when I was younger I was afraid of birds after watching “The Birds” and having barn swallows dive bomb me every time I was by our barns. But this little guy melted my heart!!
He was so quiet compared to our previous birds which was a nice change 😅 now I will probably go down the rabbit hole of researching all the breeds of pigeons. It’s amazing all the different breeds in just one genus family!

I took a free mini course this past week from @gingiber @stacie_bloomfield and it inspired me to revisit some of my old work and redraw it.
She talks about “leveraging your work”, basically making the art you’ve already created, work for you. So rather then draw something completely new, I took an old drawing and recreated it in my current style.
And I gotta say, this may be one of my favorite illustrations yet!
I think this would be really cute on a greeting card, or an art print. What could you see this little bird on?

It’s fall now right?
I’m learning historical pattern styles and this print is based off a damask style pattern. Damask became popular in the Middle Ages but it’s origins run all they way back to China around 300 BCE.
It’s a classic!
I’m playing with some other damask style patterns and it’s fun to have a “set style” to follow so I can really focus on my artwork!

From going to museums, antique stores, and fan expo featuring so many creative people, I’m ready to dive back into my art.
